THE PROJECT:

ENCHANTED
STORYBOOK
WALKTHROUGH

THE CLIENT:

WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING

  • PROJECT DETAILS:

Was brought in from December 2011 until January 2015 to ideate, conceptualize, mock-up, show and set design, and ultimately oversee the China production of all elements for this one-of-a-kind immersive Castle Walkthrough Experience.

I reported to Executive Creative Producer, Doris Hardoon on all concept materials and design, and worked with the creative writers, show set department, and production on all assets involving both Walt Disney Imagineering Creative and Production Departments.

In Addition, I worked closely with R and D and Special FX departments to create and conceptualize special effects and never before seen technology that we were embedding within our show/set designs.

  • PROJECT ROLE:

Concept Designer, Show Designer, Production Designer, Assistant Art Director/China-build

  • PROJECT COMPLETION/OPENING:

I finished the final set build and in-field art direction for install, December 2014/January 2015.

  • PROJECT APPROVALS

Bob Iger, Bob Weis, Doris Hardoon, Tom Staggs and John Lasseter.

PLAN & ELEVATIONS

After our concept was approved, I worked closely with the Show Set department to create a ground plan that made sense, allowing sufficient space for the sets and intricate FX. I originally doodled drafts for the plan on tracing paper with our Show Set designer, (this was done dozens of times until we landed on our final plan). Everything we worked on together, got us to the final Castle Walkthrough Attraction design. Every set piece item was drafted in detail to take to the field for build and install.

SCENIC TREATMENT

I provided early color elevations to inform the team of direction and intent (these were not meant to be final, as iterations are a part of the process). These color elevations were passed to the Art Director after he joined the team and WDI in late schematic/ in DD Phase.

After I relocated to Shanghai, I used final color elevations for factory direction and build.

MAGIC MIRROR

Early meetings for this show effect involved just a handful of the team. Ultimately, the set and effect were mocked up to test if the theory worked. It was a proud moment, when we were able to operate this incredible set piece, with the added challenges of such limited walkthrough space to make it work.

"Rather than dedicating Enchanted Storybook Castle to a single princess, this is a palace that celebrates all of the Disney Princesses by giving a home to each of their stories and inspiring aspiring royals to inhabit their favorite tales. Within its walls, Enchanted Storybook Castle is resplendent with artful representations, thoughtful details and opportunities to explore, from the “Once Upon A Time” Adventure walk-through attraction where guests encounter Snow White, to the Voyage to the Crystal Grotto boat ride that ventures into the castle’s secret underground chambers."
